I have been a part of the 10,000 steps program for a couple of years now and really enjoy the program. I work at night, so I am my walking buddy. It is not hard for me to go over and above the steps required as I am a Security Guard, 3rd shift. So needless to say I don't miss out on my steps. Even when I am not there I am a "very" active mom of 1 teen, 2 young ones and still do running with them. This program also makes me more accountable for myself and my health.

I teach my kids about the importance of exercise and eating properly & most importantly label reading, being aware of what you consume as well as taking the time for yourself to exercise. I am a health freak if you will and I love to learn and educate.

Thanks for the program,
Celeste-Sero-Gainesville-Fl

I have had a heart operation and I am nervous about doing aerobic activity so I am doing 10,000 steps and this has really worked for me - I have just walked across Mississippi with three days to spare and in excess of the 343,750 steps - This web site has really made me more aware of how far I walk and I never let myself go below the 10,000.
Thank you so much - This is a great idea. Vandra

I got sick of whinging and moaning when I looked at myself in the mirror and decided to get up and move a bit more. I bought a pedometer and then by chance found this fantastic website!

I've only been counting steps for a week and a half but already I'm hooked! I love trying to beat my previous days steps. I am finding it much easier to concentrate on the steps rather than the kilos (I know from experience that it's counterproductive to weigh yourself each day!).

Even if I don't beat the previous days steps, I can still see on the graph how far I have come since starting - it is a great motivational tool that graph!

In a short amount of time I already feel healthier and the biggest thing I've noticed is that I sleep much better. Haven't weighed myself yet as I'm trying not to concentrate on that part!
Good luck to everyone challenging themselves - you can do it!

Hi,
What an inspiration - I like most of the others have slowly gotten less inactive. 10 years ago before I got my licence I used to walk everywhere, then I graduated from uni & needed a car to get to & from my workplace. I used to walk a little as well, but then 3 years ago my husband was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue & the family walks became a thing of the past.

Now I am determined that even with a young child & shuffling work & home I am going to have to fit in some more activity. Hopefully soon I'll be as inspirational as the rest of you people.

My kids school has purchased a pedometre for each child and teacher (over 600) so I thought I had better get in on the act. I didn't realise how many steps are taken throughout the day and it is great to be able to record them on a website like this.

Thanks so much. (Now just a few more steps)

The Rabble

I'm proud of our team. None of us are super athletes: We don't trains for ironman, triathlon or marathon. Everyone has a desk job and the lunch room is no further than 30 metres away for any of us. I don't think any of us thought we would be high performers in the challenge. But we were in for a pleasant surprise.

I have to admit, it was a fairly slow start. To start with, we sat about 15th on the ladder after the first couple of days. I started getting the emails flying to raise the spirit of the team. Everyone joined in the friendly banter and it just sort of grew on us that we were going to give this challenge a red hot go.

To make things more interesting, all of us had worked closely with the members of one of the other teams. These guys are on site and walk a couple of kilometres each day as part of their normal work. While it seemed almost impossible to win the competition outright, beating this other team represented a challenge that we could definitely achieve. I decided to make it official by sending the other team an email and throwing down the gauntlet. No doubt, this added to the motivation of their team as well, but it at least made sure that our team wouldn't back down without a fight.

As we progressed through the competition, I was really impressed the way every member of the team lifted above their every day routines to help contribute. Lunchtime walks were a favourite with many of the team. I decided to get off the bus a few stops early and walk a few kilometres on the way to work and again on the way home. I also take the stairs instead of the lift wherever I can. My biggest stepping day however was simply an ordinary Saturday at home. Between fixing the house, playing with the kids and walking around the shops, I managed to do over 37,000 steps. Who needs any more motivation than just being able to play with the kids?

As the destination grew nearer, the whole team continued to lift. Our main rivals were still right on our heels, so we couldn't let up even for a day. And the guys did it. We reached Townsville third overall on the morning of the 28th of August. Our rivals reached Townsville later on the same afternoon, much too close for comfort.

Since the finish, I have continued my morning and evening walks. I even feel a bit fitter: Walking up the ten stories to the office is easier than it was. I'm grateful that the challenge encouraged me to become more active and take more of an interest in my fitness. I hope that for me, this is not the end of the journey, but just the start.

Thanks team.

Hi,I started 10,000 steps a week ago. I got myself a pedometer which I bought in London during my recent trip there. I stayed just a fews steps from Hyde Park that triggered me to start walking. On coming back to Kuala Lumpur I stumbled into this wonderful website. Walla, I'm so pleased with my action. I stay very close to a public park with a good jogging track that surrounds a lake. Despite the fasting month, I'm able to achieve on average of 7,000 plus steps.

Reading and sharing this story certainly helps me to continue with this healthy lifestyle. Being in the late 50+ I find myself transform into a newborn person. My adrenaline starts to flow again and feels good after all the hectic years of working in academia. My target is to achieve a constant 10,000 steps and beyond by end of the year, God willing.

Cheers, Atiya. KL Malaysia

I stopped smoking June 2008 after 30+ years of smoking. I am 52 years old, in September I started walking and jogging. Am now averaging over 25,000 steps a day and feel better then I have since I was in my 20's. I also play tennis and swim on a regular basis, just having a pedometer on makes me conscious of my goals.

I've had a couple of 'oh no!' pedometer moments.

The first was earlier this year when I was volunteering at a bushfire appeal event - the dress I was wearing didn't have anywhere to clip my pedometer so I tucked it inside my bra strap. Well clearly I didn't attach it well enough because at the end of the day it was gone - I can only imagine that it slipped out of my bra and down the inside of my dress on to the ground!

A new pedometer was quickly obtained, but disaster almost struck again about 2 months ago when my husband, wandering through the laundry, shouted out 'quick, come here!'. I thought the laundry was flooded or something similar until he pointed to a red shape bobbing about inside the front-loader and asked 'is that your pedometer?'!! We fished it out, he pulled it apart and let it dry for a couple of days before reassembling and it's been good as new ever since. I now check my pockets more carefully before tossing in a load of washing.

I just started today. I just got a new pedometer, it hangs around my neck, or on my waist, and works both ways. It is worth it to not have those cheap one's anymore that cancel out the steps if you're not careful. I just joined a challenge that starts tomorrow, and my 6 year old and I already were out for an hour this morning. He on his bicycle. I logged 4500 so far this am and it's 9:17 am.

Hi, I have also dunked my pedometer in the porcelain bowl and retrieved it before disaster arrived, I now have a cotton tape attached to it and keep it pinned and that has saved many more dunkings and losses. I was also going swimming at our local pool, changing before I went and there were steps to be missed so I clipped it to the top of my bathing suit and it worked well. Left it at the poolside with my towel and it went on as soon as I got out. Until the inevitable happened and I did 10 lengths with it still attached. I dried it as best I could, opened up the battery compartment and dried that. When I got home I put it in the Hot water cupboard and I am still using it 20 months later.
Truth be told it is going better than I am. Seem to have had a run of injuries, surgery, disasters and health problems for the last 18 months. Just seem to be getting over one and something else rears its ugly head, last thing was a tumble down the hill and hamstring injury just building up from that, nearly back to speed but had another injury but this time it was the hand. I still keep the pedometer on and record -- I will get there I know I will.

G'day Julie,

I've had a few pedometers meet similar watery fates. The last one was fell off my belt as I got out of my car in a huge downpour. I didn't realise for a few hours and by the time I got back and found it - the screen was blank. I went to the work cafeteria and ordered a cup of uncooked rice (they didn't charge me as it wasn't on the menu!!) I submerged my pedometer into the cup and pulled it out a few hours later. The moisture had been removed and it came back to life and is still working today - 4 months later. I have since bought a backup pedometer, just in case my current one gets run over the next time I drop it in a car park.

Hello fellow steppers,
I just started the challenge today with a brand new pedometer I purchased last night. I've been all keen today - checking it every hour or so and reducing the "sensitivity function" as it appears I've walked a lot further than seems likely.
Unfortunately I just dropped the damn thing in the loo (groan!!). I'm so glad I went for the cheapy $10 one!! Off to buy a new one tomorrow - IF the one I bought last night doesn't dry out and start to work again by then.
Don't bother wishing me luck folks - I'm doing this on pure grit and determination!

Hi everyone out there in pedometer land. At our school the teachers have taken up the challenge. 3 teams of 11 and what a competition it's becoming. Being part of a team makes sure you don't get too lazy although some days I need to give my knees a bit of a rest. Have had a couple of slack days but planning to make up for it this weekend and enjoy the scenery out walking around the city. It is quite bizarre attaching your pedometer first thing in the morning, like putting your false teeth in!
Our groundsman is cruising in with huge times because of all the walking he does in his job, although the lower school teachers are giving him a run for his money with all the chasing around they do. Our challenge is the Great Wall of China. Would love to do it for real!

Hi there,
It's been an amazing ride, from 2,000 to 2,500 per day I am now out around 13,000 steps. And working on the 14,000 steps per day.

It takes me about an hour to do 7,000 so on a good day with a couple of hours I make 13,000 14,000, around that. But some days I only make 4,000 because I dont have time, you know... I do work...

Still, Pedometer is part of my life, and at 52 I am glad to have finished July with 13,000 steps daily.

This site keeps me walking...
Great job guys.
Thanks

We have just started this at work and I am really surprised at how far I don't walk each day. I had started to ride to work and was really pleased at how much 30 mins(to work) and 50 mins (home from work) cycle added to my total.

My work unit are going to challenge the next door unit and see if we can't inspire more steps to happen. We are organisning regular lunchtime walks and constantly encouraging each other to do more. Will our enthusiasm wear each other out??

Hi,Im still a newbie to all this.I bought my pedometer on July 27th I just kept adding the steps till the next wed Aug 5th.Then it started over so I totalled about 88,224. So Yesterday I restarted it just for fun it said I walked 18,191 steps. I'm not sure if that's right? I did walk my dog 3 miles yesterday and did a lot of running around and my legs and feet were killing me. So being not sure if that is accurate I started over this morning just to see. This has helped me to keep moving around in general - house work, I started walking my dog every day which she needs. She's an Irish Setter so shes SO HAPPY! :0) This really is a good idea for people to keep track of how active they need to be. Going to be tracking everyday now this week although I did restart yesterday. I wish everyone the best of luck.

At least we're all trying.

Hi Beginner

How are you progressing? Are you now recording your steps each day? Sometimes it is a struggle. Today I forgot my pedometer and felt lost without it. Some days I find it a bit of a nuisance because it gets in the way.

I have slow days where I just can't get the time, due to work commitments to get out and walk. Luckily I do 1/2 hour work outs at a ladies gym, but I have only been getting there once a week. Let's get the motivation up a notch and get those steps higher. Do you participate in the I-challenge? This is a good motivator.

Good luck - small steps and goals and build on these.

I joined in January 2007 and have averaged 9,095 steps a day. I will soon have my 79th birthday. I go to the gym twice a week, dance once a week and enjoy my garden.
I have slipped back lately due to a tight muscle in my hip and leg.
I am so pleased I joined in 2007 as my energy levels increased from when I started.
I always wear my pedometer. Joining would be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Thanks again. It really helps to know that others are caring.

My dog is so much happier now that I'm walking more. She has lost a bit of weight and I'm the same. My eating is still an issue but I'm so proud that at least I can consistantly get my 10,000 steps. Maybe the food will get better too someday.

G'day all,
I joined '10,000 Steps' in November 2008, and it has proved to be one of the best moves I've done in my recent memory. I'd lost 10kg through dieting, but had plateaued and needing something else to motivate me. This website has been just that and more!

I was a 3000-4000 steps a day person before Nov08, and now averaging over 15,500 a day. The I-Challenges give that added dimension to keep you focussed. I've enjoyed trying to catch up to those next few people ahead of me on the 'Annual Achievement Board', and forever looking over my shoulders for those creeping up behind me!

This step counting business has also led me to purchase a treadmill which allows me to do a couple of serious sessions of walking before and after work.

Thank you to all those involved behind the scenes with this website.

For me, the best thing about walking daily is getting outside and being aware of the seasonal changes in the neighbourhood. I live in a beautiful, tree filled suburb, and I get out and walk while the streets are still very quiet early in the morning. There are subtle changes every day that become part of my street's story. This morning I smelled the wattle that has just come out. I also notice the behaviour and habits of the variety of birds that share this space. Walking connects me to the world.

For beginner, 25th (my birthday).
Just keep trying and posting your steps daily and seeing your total for the month grow and your daily average will keep you going and trying to improve. I am having a bit of a struggle having had several upsets, injury and knee surgery and depression in the last 18 months but I still keep trying and am improving on what I got down to but not yet back to what I was, but it will happen and I'm not giving up.

Hi everyone,

Before I started this 10,000 Steps program, I found that I was averaging a shocking 2,000 steps per day! My previous attitude was to park as closely as possible to wherever I was getting to, and sitting down was more comfortable than standing up / walking, and driving to get lunch. I've tried gym memberships, home gym, dance classes.. but the problem has always been lack of time between full-time work and after hours obligations.

This program has changed my life. The pedometer is a great motivation tool but this website is even better! I absolutely LOVE entering my daily steps and I make a conscious decision everyday to walk around the block at work at least 4-5 times per day. I walk to get lunch and I walk while having my light wrap/sandwich roll instead of sitting down somewhere to eat. I also park further away from the shops. It is a great way to stay fit and it doesn't require too much of your time if you know how to swap "sitting around" activities with "walking around" activities.

Hello fellow walkers,

I joined this site at the start of the year and have found it is an incredible motivational tool. I have tried to keep walking a minimum of 10,000 steps a day for the past few years but I have found since joining this site I am averaging 14,000 steps a day.

I get up an hour earlier in the morning and spend half an hour on the wii fit stepping, where I average 4,000 steps, which sets me up for the day. Working in an office job, I try to get up every half an hour or so and make sure I get out for a quick jaunt at lunch times.

I have more energy and am always trying to find excuses to fit more steps into my day!

Thanks 10,000 Steps, what a great site!

Hi walkers from sunny Vancouver Canada,
I joined about 18 months ago and was doing well, but sadly my world fell apart when my beloved 21 year old daughter died in a horrific fire. I just gave up on life.

I am also awaiting sinus surgery. I slowly realised that I was not honoring my daughter by wasting my life. I needed to do all manner of things, different things, activities and places that she would want to do and see.

So I have joined the June I-challenge. I have also given myself a year to lose 70 lbs and get back in shape. I love making sure I get my 10,000 steps in a day and hope I finish the trail.
So good luck to all the walkers out there!!!!

I found that after high school during University my energy and stamina was greatly reduced. Long sleepless hours before deadlines and the convenience of junk food meant that my weight began to gradually increase over this time. Now I work full time and am even more sedentary than before, at least at uni I was constantly walking around campus.

But 8 months ago when I moved out of home I decided to change everything. No more junk food at all! And a minimum of 30mins exercise a day. I also started Wing Chun Kung Fu so now I can kick butt and look great and have never felt better!

My weight has not changed much but it is in a normal range. I also look slimmer and what used to be loose and flabby is now tight and muscled and since fat weighs less than muscle I'm not worried :)

I just got my pedometer today as part of a workplace challenge so I think now I am well on my way to feeling and looking great!! I’m sure recording my steps daily will be a great way to keep me motivated!

It is also great to read some of the stories here and some of them have really helped to get me motivated not to mention some of the great tips people have been leaving.

Hello fellow walkers, I have just decided to stop trying to loose weight and to achieve my steps.
My weight has always been up and down and I either do so many steps that I'm plumb worn out or I do hardly any or none at all. I'm sick of myself with all my excuses so I have decided that instead of trying I will just DO it. I am really inspired by all the stories that I read, thanks for taking the time to write. Happy stepping to you all...Jean

Hi Margie

I find that if I cannot get out, because it is too dark for a girl alone or it is too wet - it is always helpful to get infront of the TV and do the good old faithful jogging on the spot. I take a half hour of vigorous spot jogging as a fill in. I will also do it if I feel I didn't quite get enough out of my daily routine. I can build a sweat up this way and just get that final top off.
I hope this helps

Hi all,

I hope I have pushed all the correct buttons that will see me begin the Manawatu to Marlborough walk on Monday, 1st June. I particularly wanted to "walk" in this area as we lived in Blenheim, Marlborough, during the first year of our marriage, and it will be fun to "go back". I will have to get out our old Road Atlas of NZ!

I saw a casual mention of "10,000 Steps" on the WW site and went Googling. I am an LTM needing to shed 20kgs, and I think this will encourage me to keep moving! Some of my steps will be at CURVES on 4 days of the week.

Whoever dreamed up this activity is to be congratulated!

Best Wishes to you all.

Hello Everyone. Winter is creeping in an the days are so short. I'm finding it hard to keep up the exercise at the moment. Work is busy and I feel guilty if I don't put in a little extra. The only problem with this is it cuts into my exercise time after work. When the weather is dull and cooler I find it hard to stay motivated. When I get home and haven't done my exercise I feel sluggish. The steps help and I can manage to keep up my goal. I'm concerned because my weight is starting to creep up. Too much comfort food at the moment. Not much junk food, but too much in general.

Any advise or helpful hints. Need some extra motivation.

Dear Fellow Walkers,

I joined this program in July 2008, my initial goal was to average 10,000 steps a day. In October 2008 I reviewed my goal and set my sights on 5,000,000 steps (13,700 steps per day) in the first year. I will reach this goal today (with 57 days to spare). This has been a remarkable transformation for a 49 year old who was averaging between 3,000-4,000 steps per day before starting a 4 week challenge at work.

I now park my car before I get to work and walk the last kilometre or so, walk for 30 minutes most lunch breaks and walk the dog most nights. I’ve also rediscovered cycling (a great way to explore your local area and beyond) and use Wii Fit occasionally - which is a great tool for exercise as well as monitoring your weight and BMI etc.

I wish everyone all the best in reaching their individual goals.

Cheers,
Paul

Hello everyone. I didn't even plan to sign up but once I saw all the comments, I had to.

I Googled "10,000 steps" and "sleep better" and found a comment on this site that someone had left years ago (which is how I found you). In the last 10 days I've averaged 6,579 steps a day, even though one of those days I walked a total of 21,970. I missed three days which messed up my average.

In any case, I live in New Jersey and was recently laid off like so many others now and was going crazy being home all day waiting for the phone to ring. I am 41 years old and although I am a size 4, I've noticed over the last few months of being home in front of my pc all day that I've gotten a little lazy and noticed love handles developing. I began doing upper and lower body exercises with The Firm that I already own so I wouldn't shell out more money that I can't afford right now. But it still kept me indoors and I was restless afterward. I bought a pedometer one afternoon while grocery shopping and planned to make it a ritual to walk every morning just as the sun was coming up. I had no plan, just figured I'd walk in one direction for 5,000 steps, turn around and go back home.

Well, although I didn't stick to the morning ritual and sometimes go in the afternoon or at the end of my day, a day without walking feels wrong now. I can't express how much I get out of it. First of all, I "read" more as I download audio books from my public library to listen to. Sometimes it's meditation, sometimes it's a love story, other times I just listen to music. Lately, I've enjoyed just listening to the neighborhood itself, my steps, the birds, my breath. It's peaceful, especially when I go before people are out and about.

I'm noticing the beauty of my neighborhood that I rarely notice when I'm zooming through it in my car. I wave at the neighbors I'm beginning to see regularly and I make it a point to go up or down a different street each time, just to look at the beautiful homes and see something new. I even discovered a great Latin restaurant that I didn't even know existed only 2 miles away.

I sleep better at night, I feel a wonderful sense of community and I only wish I'd started this sooner.

And for those that think you have to power walk or really sweat for results, it's not true. I have a digital scale that measures body fat and in just the week and a half that I've been walking, there's been a slight decrease in my body fat. I've also measured my thighs, waist and hips on the 1st of this month and will do so again at the end to see the difference. I don't care about the weight so much as I know muscle weighs more than fat so the scale isn't always the best indicator. Get your measuring tape out, people, and let that be your guide!

Enjoy everyone!!

Hi All
I am really loving being part of this challenge. Because I wear my pedometer all day every day I am aware of how much I have to keep moving to keep my steps up. Being office bound 5 days a week it is really important to get out at lunch time and have a walk for 2 reasons, clear the head and get some fresh air. I have ridden my bike to work again, and although it is getting cool in the morning it is such a great time to be on the bike. Thanks

Just joined the UniSA team walk challenge and am really motivated to get minimum 10,000 steps per day. Sitting at a desk for 8 hours isn't ideal so lunch time walks for me are essential not only to boost my daily step total but to get some fresh air, vitamin D, lower my BP and of course catch up on the goss! Hi walkers. Well I joined on the weekend and was very digilent for the first three days with my pedometer. The last two days I have forgotten to put it on in the morning and so went to work without it. I came across this site by accident and was inspired to join. What a great way to keep on track. I didn't have my car this week so I rode my push bike. I have been trying to pluck up the courage for years to do this, so yesterday and today I have achieved one of my life long goals. Not bad at 54. I feel better in the last 18 months than I have for years. I've also lost a few kilos. Feel great.
Happy walking.......Margie

Hello, I have just been introduced to this today so could be an interesting travel. If I knew about this last week I would be way up there with our recent hike to the top of Yosemite Falls here in the States (only a 1100ft gain/loss in altitude.) I love hiking and currently walk 2.6 miles round trip to work every day - unless I ride then it's closer of course? Need a pedometer thingy as I can't count that far and listen to the ipod at the same time...happy travels. TAA

Hi Everyone
The big C is haunting a lot of us. Last year i tried to keep fit while I nursed my brother through to the end. Then a big hole opened up and I went into it and grew more and more withdrawn, inactive and low. A very understanding doctor, anti-depressants, a brand new pedometer and sensible goals and I find myself back on the wagon and having fun. My goal is 100km by ANZAC day and I'm nearly there. All I need is 10000 steps, housework + 30-60 min on treadmill and outdoors when I can. I want to stick at this for 12 months at least, JayG

Hi everyone from a sunny UK

I got a pedometer after joining weightwatchers and I was amazed at how few steps I was doing!

I have slowly built my steps up over the last couple of months and usually manage to achieve above my 10000 steps per day target.

I jog for an hour each morning on my mini trampoline and this really sets me up for the day.

I did go totally overboard to start with!! I have an addictive personality and I am in AA!

My thanks to everyone for their encouragement and stories.

Love to you all

My name is Therese, and I've got off track, weight been slipping back on, feeling yukky about myself, but I'm not giving up...
I can do it again and I AM starting today.. I'll find my pedometer which I still have, and with reading all your inspirational stories of success will begin again....The only way I can manage this is to have the 'daily step reminder' sent to me daily......

I was fine over summer, then work became busier and I just didn't find enough energy in the day to get out there.. But I;ve worked out that during the winter months maybe hiring a treadmill for those low energy days might just get me through!

Any other motivational suggestions?

Hi everyone. I'm very excited to find this site. I purchased my first pedometer last Sunday. Like many others I now understand why I have been putting on weight (about a kg a year for the past 8 years)...it's simply due to inactivity. Even though I don't really overeat, and I'm still in a healthy weight range, I'm still less healthy than I should be. I'm aware I now sit at a desk 30 hours a week or more, and move far less than when I was home with kids. Now I can keep track of my activity/steps and do that extra lap around the block if I haven't been moving enough. So far I've been able to achieve the 10,000 steps a day, but I must admit that it does require extra effort to achieve....it doesn't just happen doing the normal day to day stuff. Anyway, I feel like this is the key I've been looking for (& so much cheaper than a gym membership!). Good luck everyone. I hope we can all encourage each other to stay motivated. Melinda

My story like many others is motivatd by the dreaded big C. My name is June and I shall be 70 in May, it is 2 years ago (April Fools Day a date I shall always remember) that I had my operation, after many months of chemo, I am now in remission and determined to get back to walking every morning. My aim is to walk at least the 10,000 steps every day, hopefully more my average is 11,333 at the moment, I am going to walk part of a walk from Ayr to Ayrlie Beach in Queensland in July to raise funds for cancer. One of our members is doing the whole walk, my husband and I are going as his support vehicle. Good luck to everyone who walks.

Hi everyone and congrats to everyone taking part in 10,000 Steps. I have been trying to get to 10,000 steps each day since about Feb 07. I found walking around university or a shopping centre helped a lot. Even when I was in hospital I would walk up and down the hall as much as I could. I averaged about 4200 steps a day in hospital about 12 months ago.

It is only this month since I have started on this site and I am determined that I am going to get my steps each day. It was not until my sister told me that I could put in the extra things like housework, mowing, weights etc that I could see how many steps everything else was worth.

All the best to everyone.

I have to thank 10,000 Steps for improving my general knowledge. Why? Well, I download podcasts from the ABC on topical information both national and international and listen as I walk. I often have to get out the atlas or search the internet for further information when I get home. So, not only am I enjoying my walking, but improving my knowledge at the same time.

I congratulate everyone who manages to reach at least 10,000 steps a day. I have been trying, but it means finding the extra time to go for walks. Like today I had not been feeling well and stayed home. I was amazed at the length of the walk I needed to take to make up for this inactivity. I was determined to make it and I eventually reached over it. :)

I am now determined to "just keep walking".

I am a 51 year old father of five children who had been slowly putting on weight and gettin out of shape. Over the past twelve months I have been working a lot of shift work which meant my meal times were out of routine and I would often come home at 1.00pm and binge eat and drink beer to relax after work.

However just prior to christmas I was required to run after a person in my care up a steep hill which highlighted my need to get in shape.

The final decision was made at the christmas dinner table when my eldest boy made the statement 'Gee your getting fat dad and you are not doing anything about it'.

So on boxing day I began my exercise program and struggled to walk 15 minutes and spent 15 minutes on the exercycle. However I set myself the goal of going fromm 99.4kg to 85 kg by February 28 my daughters wedding day.
Which I missed out on achieving by .9kg.

Thank you all for your stories, I find them motivating. I found this site and a pedometer in November 2008 and was shocked at how little steps I am taking. I am studying but spend most of my time stressed about it and on the couch. I finally committed to 10,000 steps and have just finished my first month of it. YAY!! I couldn't wait to get the numbers in and see my chart. I won't go to bed if I haven't walked a minimum of 10,000 even if it means doing housework at double time or doing laps up and down my street at midnight.
I am very grateful to the people who have established and continue to maintain and upgrade this site. You are all helping me keep moving and become more healthy.

I have been doing the 10,000 Steps challenge for some 18 months now. But for the past 6 months I haven't been able to do it and *hated* not being able to walk. I was diagnosed with cancer last year and have been battling it for 6 months - thus the unable to walk (it is pretty difficult stuck in intensive care with five or six machines attached!). But now I am getting better and growing stronger and am happy to be back doing at least 10,000 steps a day and aiming eventually for 12-14,000 once I get my strength back. It is so heartening for me to finally find my pedometer - pop in a new battery, the poor love hadn't been used for so long it had died - and get back outside and back to active life. :)

Hi all,
My name is Amy I am 22 and have a real hard time exercising. I received my pedometer for my last birthday and it hadn't left the packet for awhile. I finally decided to get my act together and used it for the first time today. After I returned from my walk I felt excellent, like I had achieved something today.

The hardest part will be keeping myself motivated to keep walking everyday... or maybe every second day :P

Hi all,

I found the web site - it was printed on my pedometer - it has given me the incentive I had been lacking to do my walking on a daily basis - I am thoroughly enjoying my walk through France. I had always been an extremely active person - but over the last 18 months it had all slipped away. Lots of issues in my life during that time - but I have now found myself again & am enjoying this site immensely - my friends are not interested in walking - so it is a solitary pursuit - now I have 10,000 steps it doesn't seem like that anymore. I am so encouraged by all the stories I have read & cannot wait to reach my first target for the month. I only joined this month.

It is really getting fun! I am so thrilled to print out my certificate of achievement for my Saint Giles Way i-challenge. I have also started walking continously for 30 mins for 3 days a week. Helps me to stay alert and focused the next day. I can feel that my body is still burning the fats even after the 30 mins of walk. Please stay motivated I am sure we will all achieve health if we continue to press on! Good luck and stay motivated.

Hello! I just joined this month in February-2009 and I am loving all of these stories. The people on here are so positive and give such wonderful stories of their lives. I am walking about 15,000 steps a day and it can be difficult but so rewarding. I eat a pretty balanced diet and I am trying to drink more water! Very difficult with the water though. I home school to my nine year old son and now he wants to start walking as well. I hope I can be an example to anyone.

Hello to all, I just found this site and I am already loving it. I have been walking for about a week now and I am on an average daily steps 11,000 and I have a sister who turned me to counting my steps. She gets a least 15,000 a day and she is so encouraging! So I hope that I will be able to help someone and they can also encourage me to keep going. I need all the support I can get.

I logged on about 4 months ago. I am not a fitness freak, in fact I'm a bit of a slug when it comes to exercise. However, I now keep walking. Not as many steps as I'd like though. My personal goal is 10000 steps/daily and I do not reach this goal consistently. I am further motivated by enrolling in an I-challenge. Just recording my steps daily on my personal log and the I-Challenge log is what provokes me to keep going. In the last 2 challenges I completed only 80% and 93% respectively of the journeys. This month's - I only need to average just over 8600 steps daily so should complete this one easily, especially as we are supposedly getting a cool change tomorrow - 25C as opposed to high 30s, low 40s Centigrade.(I live in Adelaide and would dearly love to accept some of the Queensland rain which I am sure Queenslanders' would be more than happy to donate to this dry, dry land of South Australia). I might consistently reach my personal goal of 10,000 steps daily irrespective of whether I participate in a challenge once it's cooler, and still dry!! I am still looking for weight loss, although I am told my shape is changing, and I am trying also to be careful with my diet. Wendy

This is my 4th year of step-counting and I sometimes joke I am going to have my podometer grafted into my waistline for more convenience.

This is also the first time in my life that I have maintained this consistency with any form of exercise. My dietician recommended 12,500 steps a day and I have been maintaining it. I love printing my certificates along the way.

To combat the time spent at my computer, I use a timer which rings every 30 minutes. I position it far away from my desk so I have to get up to turn it off and reset it. Then I take a couple of minutes to do some on-the-spot stepping or some small job which requires moving around before returning to the computer. By the end of the day, I don't have so many steps to complete. Then, if necessary, I step on the spot during TV ads, using the ad music to increase intensity.

Happy stepping to all,
Y.

I joined this challange in Jan 2009. I found out about it through SparkPeople.com a weight loss site. I need this to motivate me to keep moving and get this last of my weight off and keep it off. I am trying to get at least 15,000 per day and so far have done OK. I would like to bump it up a little more next month and try for 18,000 per day. Good luck to all!! Pat

I joined the Steps program in Nov 2008. My sister passed away after a long battle with breast cancer on 16 Jan 2009. I have been experiencing waves of grief and loss since her passing. Some days have been just too hard to handle. Depression is an insidious thing and some of us are more prone to it than others.

Having started on this program I now find that I make up my mind to set myself small achieveable Steps per day in conjunction with gentle swimming and hydro therapy.

Thanks to this program I now have a foundation upon which I can build my self-esteem and keep focused on my number one priority - my health!

I have been recording my steps for several years and increasing my goals for a few years now; entering health statistics; encouraging friends to join and using the data to illustrate case study design with measurable outcomes in my teaching. I've signed up for other websites for calorie counting and health promotion, but this one just seems to be easy, quick to use and part of my daily routine. When I first entered my steps I was more than 30 kgs heavier while challenging myself daily to reach the 10000 steps minimum. Now, I run with the dogs, go to the gym, swim, enter fun runs and generally enjoy all the benefits of excellent health. My goals are measured, graphed and highly visible so I can't delude myself or graze around with my head in the sand. Life is fuller when I am alert and alive to what is around me as well as what choices I make to achieve fitness and vitality. My friends notice and it is fun wearing things I love with the confidence that comes with having that extra spring in my step and energy to be socially engaged. I needed all the motivations this site had to offer to get moving and stay on track ... now it is fun to keep on running and get the compliments that come my way from dear friends and family.

Hello- I have just joined this site and read some of the stories posted in 2008. Like others I have found retirement, even though I am doing lots of tings and consulting part time much more sedentary than I thought. My baseline is around 5000 steps! (too much computer time). So I am setting goals to increase to 10,000. Temperatures around -12C provide a challenge for outdoor walks --but no excuses

Hi, all,

I was born in Hokkaido, so this month's i-Challenge was a real buzz. It is truly a beautiful countryside, but, oh it's so cold. When you are struggling to get out in the 40 degree heat, just imagine that it can get MINUS 40 there at this time of the year! Helps you to keep your head cool, maybe?

I started using the pedometer and have clocked in 10000 steps daily since Jan 2009. I also have maintained a low-carb diet since then, cutting back on my rice intake switching to partly brown rice meals. Eating less fried foods. The 10000 steps prog has really been a motivation for me getting me to move. I have so far lost 2.5 kg and I am hoping to lose more with this walking prog and healthy diet.

Please join me to stay motivated on this programme.

Good for you Agenes. Keep trying. I am by mature a slug, I think. However, since finding this site I am moving more, despite the fact that it was 41C here in Adeladie yesterday - I didn't move much yesterday but made up for it today. I don't like seeing my steps decreasing especially as I've entered a challenge. However I don't have the injuries you have to get past, though I do often get lower back pain which is quite debillitating as you know. Good luck and keep trying. Wendy

Dear all fellow walkers

Happy New Year to you all! May the new year bring us all GOOD HEALTH!

Today is the first day that I use a pedometer and also enter my steps. Since Feb last year, I have been suffering from acute lower back pain and rested at home for 3 months. I have never been this sick before and up to now, the pain still happen to my upper back and sometimes it can be so painful that I can't sleep. I have tried every way but still can't be able to go back to my normal self.

I subscribed to the Healthy Food Guide and accidentally found the 10,000 steps website, so I decided to give it a go. As I was resting in bed for so many months, my tummy grew and put on so much weight. I dare not go to the gym again just in case I hurt my back again. So I have make up my mind to try walking. This is my new year's resolution.

I hope by exercising I can be more healthy. Since I have my back pain problem, I never wish so much of having good health. I guess there is nothing more important than to remain healthy.

Let's all encourage one another and be a healthy person!

Cheers
Agnes from Sydney
