1. Background and History

The 10,000 Steps Challenge has been an annual community event in the Esperance region since 2004. It has been coordinated by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Health Promotion team since 2007. Since 2009 the Esperance region 10,000 Steps Challenge has been incorporated into the Active Esperance Physical Activity Plan, ensuring it will continue to be run with the support of the Shire of Esperance, WA Country Health, WA Department of Transport, WA Department of Sport & Recreation and other agencies.

The Esperance region 10,000 Steps Committee

This interagency committee consists of representatives from WACHS, Shire of Esperance, WA Department of Transport, WA Department of Sport and Recreation, and a fantastic local walking group.

2. About the Challenge

Each year the 10,000 Steps Committee re-forms to begin planning the next challenge.

Up to 450 people register for the 6 week challenge each year during term four, as this is when the weather in our region is most favourable.

Each participant receives a free log book with weekly step logs, local walking information and event details. Generous local businesses and corporate sponsors provider the funds and in-kind support required to provider prizes and run evens throughout the challenge.

A number of events take place as part of the challenge, ranging from community walks, workshops and other community evens incorporating 10,000 Steps.

Since 2010, Esperance has joined up with the national 10,000 Steps website and encourages step reporting via the website logging system. This has been a great move for the committee and will continue to take our challenge from strength to strength!

To find out more information and register for the Challenge please email the challenge coordinator: 10ksteps@esperance.wa.gov.au or call 9071 0757.
