A is for Adherence

The ability to stick to a self selected course of action

A little twist on the old quit smoking line is ‘starting an exercise program is easy, I have done it hundreds of times!’ Most, if not all of us, have started on the road to better health and well-being knowing the benefits associated with a physically active lifestyle. Sticking with these choices is the biggest challenge most of us face.

If you are contemplating a change in lifestyle, take some time to review the factors that will help you adhere to your planned activities. Some factors that will affect your predisposition include fitness and activity knowledge, positive outcome beliefs, activity enjoyment, and exercise confidence.

Knowledge is not sufficient in itself to assure adherence, but a sound understanding of fitness and exercise is one predisposing factor to a lifetime of physical activity. Take time to read in the area of physical activity, fitness and health.

A belief is something you think to be true. If you believe and think that something good will come from adopting a physically active lifestyle, your adherence will increase. Rest assured that the benefits of exercise and physical activity are scientifically documented.

Enjoyment will predispose you to adherence. Be sure to select activities that you enjoy. Forget the no pain, no gain concept, and get involved in activities that you enjoy.

Choose activities that you are confident in doing. Lack of experience, comparisons to others, unrealistic expectations and high levels of self criticism can erode your confidence. Be sure to select activities that you are competent in and give yourself the time and opportunity to learn new skills.

Adherence is your goal. A physically active lifestyle will yield many benefits in terms of health and well-being – but only if you stick to it. A bit of thought about the activities you choose will help you make an active lifestyle a habit.
