P is for Preparation
Preparation is the stage of behavioural change that is one step away from actually doing something. In the case of physical activity and exercise, we can be very good at preparing to become active. A trip to the local sports store to buy the requisite shoes, shorts and assorted other active gear may be a bit of retail therapy, but you really haven’t accomplished anything yet.
Still you have taken a step in the right direction. If you are preparing to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle, be sure to do your homework. Seek advice from the right people and sources about the activities that you should do to maximise the benefits associated with exercise and physical activity.
Aim to do something active that you enjoy and plan to do it regularly. Don’t start too hard, or too fast or you will find the benefits you are seeking well hidden by the discomfort of taking on too much too soon. Remember you and your body will adapt. Be consistent and patient in your efforts.
To set yourself up for success be sure to establish the right amount and type of support around you for your efforts. If you are a busy mom, you will need to plan for childcare to allow yourself time for activity, or plan to incorporate the children in the activity. If you are someone whose work seems to leave little time for activity, you will have to carefully plan and prioritise activity into your day.
Don’t be paralysed by planning however. The beauty of the benefits associated from being physically active is that they literally can be had by walking out your front door. Just be sure not to stop on the landing. Just keep walking.
