Things to keep in mind...
Step Entry Updates, Cut-offs & Data Visibility
- The Tournament statistics will be calculated at the time when the Tournament Coordinator downloads the file and will continually update throughout the Tournament.
- For Time Out Tournaments, participants can still enter steps for within the Tournament time frame for one week (7 days) after the end date.
- You can decide your own internal end time and date, where you let your participants know in advance when all steps need to be synced and finalised by, and download your statistics on that day and time as your official record.
- We do not have the ability to "roll-back" or confirm step counts as they were on a particular time and date. Please keep copies of your statistics downloads!
- The Tournament Statistics Spreadsheets are only available to the Coordinator, and are not visible to the Team Captains or participants.
Calculating Additional Statistics
- It is up to each organisation to use the Tournament statistics to find the prizes that best suit them. 10,000 Steps does not have capacity to perform specific calculation for organisations in addition to the statistics that are already provided.
- We encourage Coordinators to find a staff/community member within their team who is comfortable and experienced in working with spreadsheet data in Excel or equivalent programs.
Success, Awards, & Benefits
- The 10,000 Steps program benefits those who are inactive the most as walking is a simple activity which most can do regularly, on a day to day basis.
- There are limitations when looking at the “success” of the teams or Tournament only in terms of steps, as there will always be very active and less active participants.
- Awarding based on steps only will tend to continually reward those who are already very physically active. See below for some ideas for prizes other than highest steps.
- From years of feedback it is evident that organisations find immense value in the team and morale building aspect of the program and the positive conversation that participation generates.

- Random draw can be a prizes for teams who did not win any of the other prizes to encourage participation.
- Team Captain award could be used to acknowledge a special Team Captain who really inspired and encouraged their team members to get active and participate.

- Highest day entry can be found by sorting the Max Day Steps column in the Team Member Summary from largest to smallest.
- Consistent logging can be found by sorting the Days Added column in the Team Member Summary from largest to smallest.
- Best effort can be a prize which you decide on for a participant who has been very involved and had a great spirit throughout the Tournament.
Tournament Activities
We encourage you to find different ways to award and engage with your Tournament participants to foster a sense of inclusion, rather than focussing on “winning” or reaching the highest number of steps.
Participating in Tournaments helps people within the same organisation to connect in ways that they may not have usually. Some of the activities which organisations have done throughout the Tournament time frame include:
- A feature article on one participant in weekly or fortnightly newsletters which includes information on who the person is, what department they work in, their physical activity goals, what they do on the weekends and how they stay active. This is a great way to highlight champions in your workplace who are passionate about health and serve as an inspiration to others.
- Equate the steps walked by all of the participants overall in a Time Out Tournament to a distance that is significant to your organisation using Google Maps using 1 km = 1,250 steps.
- Set tasks or scavenger hunt activities to encourage participants to walk around or to a certain destination together, find a specific person, object or location or collect tokens located at areas around your location.
- Photo challenges to encourage participants to find a landmark in your area, capture a sunrise or sunset, take a selfie walking their dogs or get a snapshot of their Favourite Park or outdoor area. These photos could be emailed to the Coordinators or posted in internal intranets or specific Facebook groups.
- Encourage participants to go on a walk with someone from within their immediate team or a different department that they don’t know well.
- Start a weekly or daily walking group at a certain place for a designated time during lunch or morning breaks.
Encourage your participants to have input on fun little activities which they would like to do!
