Participating in a Tournament

So, you’ve been asked to join a team Tournament, what does that mean for you?

A 10,000 Steps Tournament is a fun and interactive initiative for workplaces, communities, and various groups to boost health and wellbeing together. It's about forming teams, embracing a bit of friendly competition, and adding more movement into your day.

You'll wear a pedometer or activity tracker, log your steps and/or minutes of physical activity on the 10,000 Steps website or app, and contribute to your team - remember every step counts!

To contribute, simply log steps in your personal 10,000 Steps Dashboard. Only steps recorded during your Tournament dates will be included in your team total. You can track your team's progress and compare against others by visiting Dashboard - View Tournament.

More about other activities: If you want to add activities other than steps - such as swimming, cycling, gym workouts - check with your Tournament Coordinator to confirm this is allowed during your Tournament. Adding activity in minutes (moderate or vigorous), will automatically convert into an estimated step count and be added to your daily total. If your Coordinator is happy for you to use activity minutes, follow these instructions on how to log other activities in the Step Log.

TIP: Log your steps regularly to keep your team total up to date. Set up customise reminders on the 10,000 Steps app to prompt you to go for a walk or sync your steps - it's a great way to stay consistent and support your team!

Staying Motivated - during and after the Tournament
On your Dashboard you can set a personal step goal, view step statistics, participate in other types of 10,000 Steps Challenges and connect with Friends. These features can help you stay motivated to be physically active and are available to continue using after your Tournament has finished. You can also use the Groups function to connect up to 20 members, set monthly goals, compare progress - it's a fun way to stay motivated together!

Getting connected to your team

Before you can access the Tournament, you will need to be added to your team.

Your Tournament Coordinator will have chosen a start date and the type of Tournament - either a Time Out Tournament where steps are accumulated over a specific time period, or a Race Tournament with the goal of completing a virtual walking route.

There are three ways you can be added to your team.

  1. Your Tournament Coordinator adds you with your email address (you used when signing up)
  2. You Team Captain adds you with your email address (you used when signing up)
  3. Your Coordinator or Captain provides you with a team invite code and you add yourself to the team on the website or mobile app.

Accessing the Tournament

Once added to your team, you will be able to access the Tournament. Use the link in the top right navigation - My Dashboard, then click Tournaments.

You can also find it:

  • Before the Start Date - click on View Tournaments in your Dashboard where you will be able to view your upcoming, current, and past Tournaments.
  • From the Start Date - clicking on the Tournament card on your Dashboard.

Once the Tournament starts, and you log or sync your steps, you should see your Tournament Leaderboard update within half an hour. If you don't see your steps after that time, contact us!

Resources for Tournament Participants

Your Tournament Coordinator has access to a number of resources to assist them with running a Tournament. They will be passing along resources throughout the Tournament but we also have resources just for you!

Printable Step Log
If you don't have regular access to the 10,000 Steps website or app, you can use this printable step log to track your steps. You can then update your steps in your Step Log.
